First off, what is a sensory processing disorder or sensitivity?

Sensory processing disorder or SPD, is a condition that affects how the brain processes sensory stimuli. This can include smell, sound, taste, touch, and vision.

 How can we help?

1. Create a Sensory-Friendly Study Space.  With as much input from your child as possible, create a quiet and comfortable study area at home where your child can focus on homework without distractions. Invest in noise-canceling headphones to help minimize overwhelming sounds and foster concentration.


2. Use Noise-Cancelling Headphones   The sounds of a busy school can be overwhelming for children with auditory sensitivity. Noise-canceling headphones are a game-changer for them! Whether it’s the loud school bell or bustling hallways, these headphones can provide a peaceful sanctuary, allowing your child to feel more at ease during the school day.


3. Manage Sensory Overload.  Work with your child to create different coping strategies when they start to feel overwhelmed at school. Be sure to consider strategies that have worked in the past and are already familiar to your child, such as taking breaks in a calming environment, deep-breathing exercises, or a favorite fidget toy that can provide comfort during overwhelming moments.


4. Partner with Teachers and Staff. Ensure teachers and school staff know your child’s sensory sensitivity challenges – especially if this is their first year at a particular school. Discuss the coping strategies that work with your child, so they are better prepared to help when needed. Work together to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that empowers your child to thrive academically and emotionally.

 BONUS TIP Connect with Other Parents! A 2013 study from the University of San Francisco suggests that Sensory Processing Disorder affects 5-15% of school-age children. Look for a supportive parent community to share experiences, tips, and emotional support. Sensory sensitivity can be more prevalent in those with diagnoses of: Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Fragile X, and the gifted population.
